Some days ago, I was browsing through my podcast playlist and stumbled on The Mitchelle Obama Podcast on Spotify

One of the episodes that got my attention was the โ€˜Working Womenโ€™ episode.

In this episode, Mrs. Obama reflects on three decades of work, friendship, and mentorship, in conversation with her former boss and mentor Valerie Jarrett.

(I will share the story of their mentor-mentee relationship in another post).

Mrs. Obama took us all on a reflective journey of how mentoring has played a crucial role in her life.

I made some notes to share with my inner circle but on second thought, I felt that others outside my circle should also benefit from these evergreen lessons.

Here are some personal notes from the conversation on mentoring๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

๐‹๐„๐’๐’๐Ž๐๐’ ๐…๐Ž๐‘ ๐Œ๐„๐๐“๐Ž๐‘๐’

๐ŸŒŸ We are living, breathing role models, not just in what we say, but in what we do.

๐ŸŒŸ If you have a platform, then you are a role model.

๐ŸŒŸ Mentorship starts early and it starts in your own backyard.

๐ŸŒŸ There is someone always watching you, so carry yourself in a way that you realize that you are always setting the tone for people behind you.

๐‹๐„๐’๐’๐Ž๐๐’ ๐…๐Ž๐‘ ๐Œ๐„๐๐“๐„๐„๐’

โšกIf you are looking for someone to mentor you, start by taking the initiative to introduce yourself to people and start a conversation.

โšกMentoring is more than just asking someone to show you the way, or tell you what to do.

โšกAs a mentee, you also have to think about what you will bring to the relationship.

โšกSo ask yourself this:
What are you bringing to the table?

Itโ€™s worth mentioning, that during Mrs.Obamaโ€™s time at the white house, the former First Lady started a mentoring program that pairs disadvantaged teens from DC with some of the most powerful women in the country.

She had this to say:

Now thatโ€™s #mentoring
